Funny how we age - the men I have come across are so eagre to play, it is said that a man never grows up his toys just get more expensive.
This song tells of a man and a woman, the man wanting to be young carefree and playful while the woman is more serious, she is sensitive to how she looks and appears in front of others, he just wants to have fun.
Is it social stigma that a man can have fun and not get labelled - where as if a woman should behave in the same way she is referred to as loose? a tease? and many other names? Is this what prevents women letting down their guard and having fun too?
She is worried because the children haven't called they have grown up and moved on - having completed the task of bringing up her children she is now lost - still wanting to be needed yet doesn't want to be seen as careless...
He just wants to hear her say she loves him - it is all in good fun - she hesitates to commit maybe fearing that she will not be able to give him all he needs.
It is a very interesting song that depicts some of my feelings....
He tells her, "I want to paint you naked on a big brass bed
with bright orange poppies all around your head."
And she says, "Crazy old man, I'm not young anymore."
"That's all right," he whispers, "I've never painted before.
"Do you love me Lady Jane, Lady Jane?
Do you love me Lady Jane, Lady Jane?
You got me talkin' to the moon, you got me walkin' in the rain.
Do you love me, do you love me Lady Jane?"
"I want to read your tea leaves by candle light.
On a fat velvet sofa, I want to be with you all night.
I want to tickle your feet with a peacock plume."
And she says, "Can you talk a little softer, there are people in the room."
"Do you love me Lady Jane, Lady Jane?
Do you love me Lady Jane, Lady Jane?
You got me talkin' to the moon, you got me walkin' in the rain.
Do you love me, do you love me Lady Jane?"
And Jane says, "My children brought me here and promised me they'd call.
You know kids forget that's just the way of it all."
And he says, "Well, that makes us both footloose and fancy free,
so Jane do you want to come see the Painted Desert with me?
"Do you love me Lady Jane, Lady Jane?
Do you love me Lady Jane, Lady Jane?
You got me talkin' to the moon, you got me walkin' in the rain.
Do you love me, do you love me Lady Jane?"
